Social organization Youth Unity For Voluntary Action (Yuva), Jamshedpur in association with Oxfam India has launched a special 16-day campaign to counter violence against women in East Singhbhum district. As a part of this campaign a one-day conference was organized in Chakdi village in Potka block on December 6, 2014. Hundreds of women from the nearby villages attended this one day conference.
The conference was attended by the well-known lawyer Mr. Balram Tudu, ANMS Kandulana and Chandmani Swainya and Usha Deogam of Yuva, Jamshedpur. The programme was compered by Barnali Chakraborty, secretary, Yuva.
BarnaliChakraborty said that Oxfam India has launched a 16-day campaign all over the country to create awareness about violence against women as well as domestic violence against 2women.
The purpose of the campaign is to ensure that the laws relating to violence against women are implemented effectively and the need to appoint Protection Officers and Service Providers is advocated.
Addressing the programme Yuva secretary Barnali Chakraborty said that women are victims of violence within the precincts of house as well as without. She said that most of the women do not raise their voice against such violence and this emboldens those who perpetrate violence on them. She underlined the need to raise voice against all sorts of violence against women.
She said that a number of laws have been enacted in the country to protect women from violence. She said that the Domestic Violence Act 2005 is an important piece of legislation that provides for appointment of Protection Officer as well as Service Providers under the Act.
She said that this provision has not been implemented in Jharkhand yet. She said that Oxfam and Yuva have jointly launched a postcard campaign for implementation of this provision of the act. This campaign would continue till December 10, she said. She said that quiz and slogan competitions would also be organized in different colleges as a part of this campaign.

The conference was attended by Mary Sardar, Arup Mandal, Abhishek Sardar, Shankar Sardar, Jairam Sardar, Prakash Gope, Sunil Sardar, Renumati Sardar, Chunila Sardar, Subodhini Sardar, Joba Sardar, Kamali Sardar, Santari Sardar, Uttam Acharjee and a number of local Sabar youths.
