Ardhendu Chatterjee inspects Yuva-supported home gardens, shares valuable tips on home gardening

Jamshedpur: Ardhendu Chatterjee, a well-known social worker of Kolkata visted Podahatu village of Potka. During his visit he inspected the home garden developed by the women farmers with the active help and guidance of Yuva, Jamshedpur and GGF. Mr. Chatterjee also gave useful technical inputs to Yuva Jamshedpur members and volunteers for improving the home gardening techniques. He pointed out some of the faults in the methods used by Yuva members. He also threw light on the basic concept of home gardening.

Mr. Chatterjee suggested that some good local practices in farming, especially home gardening, should be encouraged and documented. He said that we have several local species of plants which are unique in their use and flavor. Knowing about the characteristics and utility of such plants can help us get the maximum out of home gardening. He said that home gardening can prove effective for increasing quality nutrition of a family and the community in general.

He said that fencing should be changed into life fencing. It means that plants, e.g. Sahjan or Neem, should be used for building a fence and plants with vines can prove very effective in creating a fence. He said that this would help in increasing production of vegetables even when the available land area is small. He also named several local leafy vegetables and said that growing these would help increase farmers' income.
Mr. Chatterjee said that only those vegetables and plants should be grown in home garden whose seeds can be preserved for next crop. He also gave several valuable suggestions for preserving water.

Describing the vitamins and rich nutrients that we get from vegetables, he said that there is a need to make people aware about how to cook vegetables so that the rich nutrients in the vegetables are not destroyed.
The programme was hosted by Yuva's founder-member Mr. Arbind Tiwary. Those who attended the programme included Pramod Kumar, Arup Mandal, Abhishek Sardar, Gautam Mandal and Chandmani Sawaiyan.
